Storing hazardous materials and disinfectant safely

  • Are you using sanitisers in your company?
  • Have the quantities increased during the Covid-19 pandemic?
  • Are you aware of the fire hazards of sanitisers containing ethanol?
  • Do you know your quantities and when special storage provisions apply?

► DO NOT TAKE ANY UNNECESSARY LIABILITY RISKS!

The demand for disinfectants has risen rapidly due to the current hygiene regulations for pandemic control. In order to ensure a permanent supply and to cover the demand, more supplies are now being purchased and stored.

Since disinfectant is in most cases classified as a flammable substance and as such, is considered a dangerous substance, the legal requirements of the Dangerous Substance and Explosive Atmosphere Regulations (DSEAR) should be adhered to.*

Even the smallest quantities of hazardous substances can be dangerous, so it is important to store the hazardous substances in such a way that the danger to the health and safety of employees, other persons and the environment is eliminated or reduced to a minimum.

Flammable substances

Flammable substances are marked with a hazardous substance symbol.

Important information on the storage of disinfectants:

  • Disinfectants are flammable in most cases. Flammable substances are marked with the hazardous substance symbol "flame".
  • The quantities of disinfectants provided must be limited to the daily and shift requirements. Quantities in excess of this must be stored safely and in accordance with regulations.
  • The same legal storage regulations apply to the storage of flammable disinfectants as to all other flammable liquids.

The safe storage of disinfectant indoors - this is important:
For volumes exceeding the "small quantities", the use of safety cabinets certified to BS EN 14470 Part 1 is recommended. This will ensure the highest level of safe internal storage.*

The ideal, rule-compliant storage for disinfectants are asecos safety cabinets according to BS EN 14470 Part 1 with type-tested fire resistance.*

The advantages are obvious

  • Fulfilment of elementary requirements for fire and explosion protection
  • Legal certainty - no building permit is required for installation, no building permit is necessary
  • Flexibility - the safety cabinet can easily be moved to new locations if operational processes require it
  • Efficiency - short distances between the workplace and the safety cabinet in the work area make it easier to meet the daily requirement limit at the workplace (e.g. clearing away after work)
  • Risk minimization - reduction of the in-house transport of hazardous materials and the associated risks

As an expert for the safe storage of hazardous substances, we also have the appropriate safety cabinets for storing your quantities of disinfectants in accordance with regulations.
