2 SAFE COLLECTION OF LIQUID WASTE In many companies and laboratories, using flammable hazardous materials is an unavoidable part of everyday life. However, with frequent handling it can be easy to forget that solvents pose significant hazards to people, the environment, and property even after use. Because of this, they must be collected safely until they can be properly disposed of. Flammable substances have harmful properties for people and the environment – for instance as the result of breathing in solvent vapours, as well as the risk of fires or explosions. Therefore, flammable hazardous materials must be clearly marked with the correct GHS symbol, so that the hazard they pose is clearly indicated. Handling and storage of these substances is regulated by a wide range of legal specifications which will vary by country / region (in Germany for example, these include the ChemG, GefStoffV, TRGS 510 section 12 and TRGS 509 section 10). The primary method for handling such hazardous materials according to the STOP principle is to substitute for a less critical alternative. If this is not possible, specialised technical measures – such as using safety storage cabinets in accordance with DIN EN 14470-1 – are required. Improper storage of flammable hazardous materials may have serious consequences. 3 To minimise the risk of fires and explosions when handling solvents, at least one element in the fire triangle must be avoided. A fire will only occur if oxygen, a flammable material, and an ignition source all come together at the same time, in the same space, and in the right mix. Since it is not possible to exclude all flammable substances and oxygen in laboratory settings or similar user settings, asecos Waste Collection Systems focus consistently on avoiding potential ignition sources. The integrated connection option to a technical extraction system prevents concentrations of hazardous vapours and the formation of explosive atmospheres. This prevents fires or explosions from occurring, and significantly improves user safety. Electrical conductivity Both the surface of the safety storage cabinet and the individual components of the Waste Collection Systems are manufactured of electrically conductive materials. Closed system The technical extraction of the closed system prevents gases and vapours from escaping into the indoor air or the interior of the cabinet. This both prevents the formation of explosive atmospheres and eliminates health and environmental hazards. Highest fire protection The cabinet models are type-tested in accordance with EN 14470-1 and offer a fire resistance capability of 90 minutes. Tested fire protection lead-through For feeding hoses and cables through vertical surfaces, while maintaining certified fire resistance. 5 The Waste Collection System – how it works: Dispose of the solvent via a permanently installed funnel High-quality hoses connected to the funnel transport the solvent waste into the interior of the cabinet. 8 SEAMLESS CERTIFICATION Solvent waste remains flammable or highly flammable after laboratory testing or cleaning work, just as the solvent itself does. There is a health risk when handling these materials, for example due to breathing in solvent vapours, as well as a risk of fire or explosion. When handling solvents, therefore, technical safety measures must be taken. The asecos system solution helps avert key hazards: the combination of disposal components and a fireresistant safety storage cabinet allow for quick and safe disposal of slightly to highly flammable solvent waste directly at the source. Because of this, asecos has developed an all new solution: the fully certified asecos Waste Collection System is WASTE COLLECTION SYSTEM based on type 90 safety storage cabinets from asecos and components from the company S.C.A.T. to collect flammable liquids. ADVANTAGES FOR USERS Compliance with stipulated workplace limits ensures that health risks to employees are minimised. The design, which is coordinated for technical extraction, also prevents the formation of explosive atmospheres.
